How much does an AI consultant cost in the UK? We checked every published price.

An AI consultant in the UK costs £1,500 to £5,000 for a readiness audit, £900 to £1,600 a day at a mid-sized consultancy, £2,000 to £5,000 a day at the Big Four, and £12,000 to £40,000 for a first implementation, based on twelve firms’ published prices in 2026. The measured contract market is cheaper than any of them: the median AI consultant day rate is £575.
Why we did this as a survey
Type the question into Google and you get ten articles, all from the last eighteen months, each opening with a confident sentence and a price band, and not one of them citing where the band came from. Most were written by consultancies, including this one. So rather than add an eleventh opinion, we did the work a buyer would do if they had a day: we read every UK firm that publishes AI consultancy prices, recorded the figures and the dates, and put them in one table.
Then we did something none of the other articles do. We set the quoted prices against the only measured figures that exist, the rates actually agreed on AI consultant contracts, tracked by ITJobsWatch from live job postings. The gap between what firms quote and what the market pays turns out to be the most useful thing in this guide.
Two things to hold onto as you read. Every number below excludes VAT unless stated. And a day rate on its own tells you nothing; it is the day rate multiplied by the number of days nobody has written down that decides what you pay.
What twelve UK firms publish, side by side
These are the firms that put prices on their websites or in their own pricing articles, as of September 2026. Where a firm quotes a market range rather than its own price, the table says so. The dates matter: three of these pages were updated within the last six weeks.

The consensus, with the disagreements left in
Reconciling twelve sources is mostly a matter of noticing when two firms are describing the same thing under different names. Once you do, the market agrees on far more than it disagrees.
| What you are buying | Consensus UK range | Where sources disagree |
|---|---|---|
| Readiness audit or scoping, SME | £1,500 to £5,000 | Helium42’s "strategy workshop" at £12,000 to £35,000 is an enterprise product with a different label |
| Assessment through to a written roadmap | £8,000 to £15,000 | Only AI Expert states it as one figure; it matches two other firms’ sprint plus roadmap added together |
| Freelance or independent day rate | £400 to £800 quoted | Some pages stretch this to £2,000; the measured market says nine in ten contracts settle below £734 |
| Mid-sized or boutique consultancy day rate | £900 to £1,600 | Specialist boutiques quote to £2,500 |
| Big Four or enterprise day rate | £2,000 to £5,000 | Helium42 starts it at £1,500; Winder quotes £500 to £1,500 an hour |
| Hourly advisory, boutique | £150 to £400 | Insightful’s floor is £75 |
| First implementation or proof of concept | £12,000 to £40,000 | Two firms run larger pilots to £85,000 or £100,000 |
| Production build, SME | £40,000 to £90,000 | Mid-market £120,000 to £400,000; enterprise to £1.5 million |
| Minimum engagement at a large firm | £100,000 | Google’s AI Mode cites £25,000 to £50,000 for mid-sized consultancies |
| London premium on day rates | 10 to 40 per cent | Helium42 says 10 to 15; Optimus says 20 to 40 |
What the measured market says, and why quoted rates run high
Every article on this subject quotes day rates. ITJobsWatch measures them, from the rates attached to live contract postings. In the six months to 12 September 2026 the median day rate for an AI consultant contract in the UK was £575. The tenth percentile was £463 and the ninetieth was £734, across 96 postings. That is up seven per cent on £538 a year earlier, and down from £725 two years ago, when there were only ten postings and the title was rare enough to command a premium.
Set that against the "£500 to £2,000 a day" that appears on half the pages we read. Nine contracts in ten settle below £734. The upper half of the quoted range is not what freelance AI consultants earn; it is what consultancies charge for them, or what a page hopes you will anchor to before hearing the real number. Generative AI specialists command more, with a median of £675 in the six months to December 2025, which is still inside the band.
This gives a buyer a test that no consultancy will offer you. A fixed-price audit at £2,500 to £6,000 is four to ten days of measured market rate. A £12,000 proof of concept is about three weeks of one senior person. If a quote implies far more days than the work could plausibly take, the day rate is not the problem; the scope is.
What each engagement actually contains
The names differ from firm to firm; the contents do not. A readiness audit is interviews with the people doing the work, a look at the data you already hold, an opportunity list ranked by return, and a written recommendation. At £1,500 to £5,000 it should also tell you what each opportunity would cost to run per month once it is live, which is the figure most proposals omit and the one that decides whether the project survives its first invoice.
A roadmap engagement adds a costed plan from first use case to production, with a supplier-agnostic backlog you can take anywhere. A proof of concept is one use case built on your own data, usually in two to four weeks, and it is where budgets first diverge: a boutique will build it for £12,000 to £40,000; an enterprise consultancy will not start for less than £100,000, and will often insist on a retainer.
Production is the expensive part because it is the part the demo never showed you: integration with the systems people actually use, cost that scales with usage, monitoring, and somebody on the hook when it fails at 3am. Winder puts year-one operations at 15 to 25 per cent of the build cost. Insightful puts data preparation alone at 15 to 25 per cent of most budgets and advises a contingency of 25 to 40 per cent above the quoted fee. Helium42 says hidden costs add 40 to 60 per cent. They are describing the same thing from three angles: the quote is not the cost.

Is it worth paying for at all?
The Office for National Statistics has been asking businesses about AI since 2023. In June 2026 about 35 per cent of businesses with ten or more employees said they used it, up from about 12 per cent three years earlier. Among the smallest firms it is 28 per cent; among those with 250 staff or more, 49 per cent. Only one adopter in ten uses it extensively. The barrier businesses cite most is not cost, which only 7 to 14 per cent mention, but a lack of expertise, and 62 per cent of those citing that gap are training their own people rather than hiring outside help.
That last figure is the honest answer for a lot of small businesses. If you have fewer than ten staff and no process that eats hours in a predictable shape, a consultancy engagement will not pay back. Buy a ChatGPT or Claude subscription for the team, agree three rules about what may not be pasted in, and see what happens in a month.
Consultancy earns its fee when the time is measurable. Sage puts the average UK small business owner at fifteen hours a week on admin; HeyBRB’s March 2026 survey puts repetitive admin at eight hours a week, ten working weeks a year, and found that 83 per cent of owners have never worked out what that costs. At a modest £30 an hour, eight hours a week is over £12,000 a year. An audit that finds even half of it is the cheapest thing in this article.
The relief most SMEs forget to claim
If what the consultant builds involves genuine technical uncertainty, part of the cost may qualify for R&D tax relief. For accounting periods starting on or after 1 April 2024 the merged scheme gives a taxable credit of 20 per cent of qualifying spend, worth about 15 per cent net at the main corporation tax rate and a little more at the small profits rate. Loss-making SMEs that spend at least 30 per cent of their outgoings on R&D can claim enhanced support of up to 27 per cent. Grant-funded work is now claimable under the merged rules.
We are not tax advisers and this is not advice. It is a reason to ask your accountant before the project starts, and to ask the consultancy to structure the scope so the qualifying work is visible.
Questions that tell you whether a quote is real
How Augustova prices it
For transparency, since we are one of the firms in the table: a fixed-price AI audit at £2,500 to £6,000 over one to two weeks, ending in a written roadmap, an ROI model with running costs included, and a prioritised backlog you keep whether or not you build with us. Implementation of a first use case is £4,000 to £15,000; a custom AI system £8,000 to £25,000; all fixed against a written scope with an explicit list of exclusions. We do not sell day rates, for the reasons the measured market makes obvious. The audit fee is credited in full against any build that follows.
Method and sources
We searched Google UK for the question and its variants on 11 and 12 September 2026, read every page-one result and every UK consultancy pricing page they linked to, and recorded each published figure with its date. Where a firm gave a range for "the market" rather than its own price, we recorded it as such. We excluded unsourced social media posts and benchmark pages that cite no data. Consensus bands are the overlap of the majority of sources; the spread column records the outliers rather than hiding them. Measured contract rates are ITJobsWatch’s, from live UK postings. Adoption statistics are the ONS Business Insights and Conditions Survey. Tax relief figures are HMRC’s merged scheme as summarised by ForrestBrown. All prices exclude VAT. We will revise the table as the sources change; the date at the top of this page is the date of the last check.
Common questions
How much do AI consultants charge per day in the UK?
Published consultancy day rates cluster at £900 to £1,600, with freelancers quoted at £400 to £800 and the Big Four at £2,000 to £5,000. The measured contract market is lower: ITJobsWatch puts the median AI consultant day rate at £575, with nine in ten contracts below £734, in the six months to September 2026.
How much does an AI consultant cost per hour?
Boutique advisory is £150 to £400 an hour; large consultancies £500 to £1,500. Hourly billing is rare for anything beyond ad hoc advice, and a fixed price against a written scope is usually the better buy.
What does an AI readiness audit cost?
Between £1,500 and £5,000 at UK boutique firms in 2026, for one to two weeks of work ending in a written recommendation. Enterprise consultancies package the same thing as a strategy workshop at £12,000 to £35,000.
How much does it cost to implement AI in a small business?
A first implementation is £12,000 to £40,000 at a boutique consultancy, or £4,000 to £15,000 for a single well-scoped use case from a fixed-price firm. Budget a further 25 to 40 per cent for data preparation, licences and integration, and 15 to 25 per cent of the build cost each year to run it.
What is the average salary of an AI consultant in the UK?
This guide covers what it costs to hire one, not what they earn. For a sense of scale, the measured contract median of £575 a day is roughly £130,000 a year on a full-time equivalent basis, before the gaps between contracts.
Is it cheaper to hire a freelance AI consultant?
Per day, yes: £400 to £800 quoted and £575 measured, against £900 to £1,600 at a consultancy. Per outcome, it depends on whether one person can carry the build to production alone. For an audit or advice, a good freelancer is often the best value; for a system that must run unattended, a small team with a track record in production usually costs less in the end.
Do AI consultancies charge a minimum fee?
The large firms do: £100,000 is the figure two sources give, and mid-sized consultancies often will not look at anything under £25,000 to £50,000. Boutique and fixed-price firms generally have no minimum.
Can R&D tax relief reduce the cost?
Sometimes. Under the merged scheme the credit is 20 per cent of qualifying spend, about 15 per cent net, and loss-making R&D-intensive SMEs can claim up to 27 per cent. Ask your accountant before the project starts.
How much does AI cost to run once it is built?
The model is usually the smallest line. Winder estimates year-one operations at 15 to 25 per cent of the build cost. In our own production systems the language model has been a single-digit share of variable AI spend, with messaging the largest line. Any proposal that omits the running cost is incomplete.
How is Augustova’s price different?
A fixed £2,500 to £6,000 audit, credited against any build; implementation £4,000 to £15,000; a custom AI system £8,000 to £25,000; no day rates and no minimum. Inside the consensus bands at the top, and below them for implementation.
